A sneak peek at what’s in store for the BIKE BARN BONANZA this Saturday at @ketchaoutdoors . 👀

Big thanks to volunteers from @martinspointhealthcare for helping freshen up 🧼 bikes and pump up tires today as well as walking all over the Scarborough campus to shuffle and wheel 100+ bikes into position for the big ol’ bonanza.

9AM - 12PM
The event will be IN and AROUND the Barn at Ketcha Outdoors. Parking is available in the main lot at 336 Black Point Rd and you can stroll over, or pull right in to field parking off of Spurwink rd.

This week we have an Antique that is a replica of an Antique. This replica is so old that it is an Antique itself. The 1986 Schwinn Cruiser Supreme was a bike made in the 1980's to look like a classic Schwinn Balloon Tire Bike from the 1930's but is outfitted with a 6-speed drivetrain and BMX handbrakes. This thing is HUGE and blast to ride.

This bike looks like one of the early "Klunker" proto-mountain bikes that were fashioned out of Pre-War Schwinn bikes and probably rides way better. I was able to find the original Schwinn catalogue from the Waterford Cycles archive and they describe this bike's color as QUARTZ GREY METALLIC. I feel like I should just let you hear what you have to say about this sweet ride.

It's going to be a BIKE BARN BONANZA @ketchaoutdoo

It's going to be a BIKE BARN BONANZA @ketchaoutdoors Saturday, April 27th from 9AM - 12PM.
It's a 1st ever (maybe annual?!) Used Bike Sale in our barn down in Scarborough where our bikes spend their winters with the goats and chickens (and sometimes children).

It'll be a first peek at most of the bikes we've built and refurbished over the winter. It's a chance for all the Ketcha families and kiddos to walk their favorite trails and pick out a new-to-them bike. And for the Portland Gear Hub fans who have never ventured the 107 acres at Ketcha Outdoors, come visit us!

We have a little collection of vintage bicycle owner's manuals here at the Portland Gear Hub. Generally, if you buy a new bicycle, you can get an owner's manual with it and some people throw them away or lose them immediately. Some people are very good about keeping files and every once in a while, those people donate a bike to us with the original paperwork.

The three booklets I'm featuring today are from a 1978 Schwinn Caliente, a 1988 Huffy Dream Girl, and a Univega Alpina Uno. Most of the information in these is pretty generic, but surprisingly thorough. They all feature an anatomical description of the bikes, suggest tools to have on hand and how to make basic adjustments to fit and operation of the bike.

My favorite feature comes from the Schwinn Manual which shows "Bicycling Don'ts". They are quick to tell you that Jumping Curbs, Riding Double and Stunting can: "Increase the chances of collisions and taking spills..."Doing wheelies or DIRT BIKING places stresses bicycles far above design intentions." While most of everything you could ever need to know about bikes is on the internet sometimes having a paper copy to look at can be much easier to digest.

We had a blast at our Spring Yard Sale!! Thanks for browsing the project bikes, admiring the used bits, jumping on deals, volunteering, designing "spinnies" to adorn our lot, and walking away with over 40 bikes to new homes. The weather and the sun really boosted our spirits, too.
