Be Your Own Mechanic is a 6-week class with a hands-on approach to learning bike repair.
Taught by professional mechanic and educator, Brian Danz, students will be able to deconstruct their bike, identify mechanical problems, and put it all back together again. This MTB-specific edition will dig into suspension systems, dropper seatposts, and disc brakes. A modern mtb is a requirement for this session of the class.

The class runs for 6 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at the Portland Gear Hub Bike School. The Bike School is a dedicated program and class space with 5 benches, stands, and bike-specific tools. There will be a mix of class and bench time to work on your own bikes! This MTB-specific edition will dig into suspension systems, dropper seatposts, and disc brakes. A modern mtb is a requirement for this session of the class.

Week 1: Basic Balance – Overview of Bike Systems & Tubeless Tire Setups
Week 2: Make It Stop! – The Braking System
Week 3: Shifty Characters – The Shifting System
Week 4: Make it Go – The Drivetrain System (Chain & Gears)
Week 5: Spinning and Bouncing – Bearing and Suspension Systems
Week 6: Round & Round – Wheel Truing & “Leftovers”

Class fee is $250 for the series. Class size is small with only 5 students. Students will receive access to high quality bike-specific tools and one-on-one instruction from some of Portland’s finest bike mechanic instructors!
